Today I am flying low and I am not saying a word.
I am letting all the voodoos of ambition sleep.
The world goes on as it must, the bees in the garden rumbling a little, the fish leaping, the gnats getting eaten.
And so forth.
But I’m taking the day off
Quiet as a feather.
I hardly move though really I’m traveling a terrific distance.
Stillness. One of the doors into the temple.
It is midwinter and the storms are raging…unprecedented weather patterns are causing havoc, California is smack dab in the middle of the worst draught in it’s history, and yet there is still no little debate about the “reality” of global warming. I am reminded of being in Cambodia and hearing the details of the US involvement in the genocide of a generation. Of being in Uganda and understanding the direct link between the western beliefs of the missionaries evolving into the current day legislation making homosexuality punishable by death. Or realizing the global economic loan infrastructure that forces families to send their daughters away on the promise of work…only unknowingly sending them into a life of forced sex slavery and suffering beyond imagining.
Let the veils be lifted. Let me understand what decisions are being made on my behalf with each dollar that I spend and every choice that I make. I am not interested in hiding or being a nice girl who plays by the rules. I am not interested in pretending that my spirituality (my very conviction that all life is sacred and worth protecting), can in any way be separate from my politics. This is one pillar the founders of our nation stood upon and one that, despite the recent appropriation and distortion of this ideal by the tea party, needs reinvigoration and redefinition. How can we bring caring beliefs and practices into our boardrooms and public offices?…how can we work for another line beyond the bottom line?…how can we move toward collaborations that truly share power while honoring the unique skills of each individual?…how can we speak about our deepest ideals without using words that have been diluted by shallow understanding and new age blindness?
I don’t know…right now in the stillness of winter as the storms rage I am sitting with many questions, deep grief and hidden flames of hope. I am outraged, I am paying attention and, like the near extinct elephant tribes I am sending out the low rumbling sub-sonic song that announces my invisible presence…my strong will to LIVE and to engage and to keep on the path. I am the fierce matriarch and the trembling child…I am the caged lion and the far seeing bird of prey…I am one of many, forging ourselves in the fire of these times.
So now, more than ever, it is time to work hard, move deliberately and sing songs of power and liberation. Come walk with me.
This month I will be at Envision Festival in Costa Rica (the nation with NO armed forces and LOTS of coffee!!) where I will be offering ritual, RISE UP singing and yoga workshops and HIGHER GROUND concert/kirtan, and participating in panel discussions. Also teaching at Globe Sound Healing Institute in SF and preparing for our annual Seva Challenge Trip in March.
In this year’s Seva Amazon Trip, we will be working with Amazon Watch, Timmy Foundation, Clearwater Project and the Cofan Survival Fund to protect the extremely threatened Rainforest of Ecuador which is being sold for oil exploitation. When these forests are cut down, we literally lose the lungs of the earth (one in every five breaths we breathe is given to us by the Rainforest). Hundreds of indigenous people have not only lost their livelihood but have become increasingly ill with rare forms of cancer due to illegal oil practices in the area. Our mission this year has been to spread awareness AND to raise funds for building health care, water treatment and sustainable agriculture in the area. Our Off The Mat, Into the World fundraisers worked very hard this year and raised over 300K to support these amazing organizations. Stay tuned for blogs, Instagram pics and more as we dive into the heart of the rainforest in order to understand the crucial ways that we can protect our every breath!!
Also, beginning in March, Ravyn Stanfield and I will be offering our 4th annual Priestess Apprenticeship in Sacred Leadership at a beautiful temple space in the Bay Area. This training is a deep dive into the art of transformation that offers tools for creative, relational and intuitive leadership and will guide you in becoming a facilitator of rituals that matter for our times. There are still a few spots left in this training and we hope that you will join us.
Let the veils be lifted!
