“Summer is here and the time is right for dancing in the streets! ”
– Mickey Stevenson, Ivy Jo Hunter and Marvin Gaye
I have been offering the Rise up/Sing Yourself Awake classes at festivals for the last few years and I am having an incredible time sharing this ritual of movement, singing, prayer and community! And this summer will no doubt bring a further evolution of the form…with all of YOU the catalysts and creatrixes! I love the revolution of spirit that I am witnessing and the myriad of ways that the alternative cultures are influencing and magnetizing mainstream culture.
Of course, there is a long way to go and much healing/revolution is needed, with many of us being called to speak truth, challenge the popularity contest/consumption trance and appropriations of modern culture and reinvigorate true connection and community building. There is also a lot at stake.
As Terence McKenna says:
“Reclaim your mind and get it out of the hands of the cultural engineers who want to turn you into a half-baked moron consuming all this trash that’s being manufactured out of the bones of a dying world”
So, as innocuous and playful as the summer can seem, I know that the global culture of music, dance, yoga, mindfulness, and joyful play in community can plant seeds of change deep in the soil of our collective soul. So go ahead…dance wildly and love madly and play joyfully!! It is crucial to defy the doom mongers and create our utopia.
This month finds me at the first of 3 Wanderlust Festivals…this one in the beautiful mountains of Vermont. I will be teaching lots of classes (including the big OTM benefit class) and also (hopefully) getting my dance on. After that I will be teaching with my friend and mentor Starhawk at the annual (and sold out!) Reclaiming Intensive in Norcal. Then next month comes Serendipity Festival in Indiana (I’ll be offering Rise Up workshops, leading kirtan and teaching a workshop called Wild Nature, Wild Soul with Julia Butterfly Hill) and Wanderlust Tahoe in CA.
Finally, Happy Father’s Day…in loving memory of my father who died of Alzheimer’s 5 years ago. He was a vibrant, loving, adventurous soul who loved to fly planes, cook great meals and SING!
The Way Wings Should
What will our children do in the morning?
Will they wake with their hearts wanting to play, the way wings should?
Will they have dreamed the needed flights and gathered the strength from the planets that all men and women need to balance the wonderful charms of the earth so that her power and beauty does not make us forget our own?
I know all about the ways of the heart – how it wants to be alive.
Love so needs to love that it will endure almost anything, even abuse, just to flicker for a moment. But the sky’s mouth is kind. It’s song will never hurt you, for I sing those words.
What will our children do in the morning if they do not see us fly???
