“To see the universal and all-pervading Spirit of Truth face to face one must be able to love the meanest of creation as oneself. And a man who aspires after that cannot afford to keep out of any field of life. That is why my devotion to Truth has drawn me into the field of politics; and I can say without the slightest hesitation, and yet in all humility, that those who say that religion has nothing to do with politics do not know what religion means.”

-Gandhi ~ My Experiments with Truth

“Every social justice movement that I know of has come out of people sitting in small groups, telling their life stories, and discovering that other people have shared similar experiences.” ~ Gloria Steinem

“To pay attention, this is our endless and proper work.” ~ Mary Oliver

Here’s hoping that you are dealing with the challenges of these times by remembering your tools and utilizing them to the full extent… especially if you are feeling outraged or despairing.  It often feels to me that as we witness more violence, corruption and the conscious spin of lies into “truth” and truth into “fake news”,  we are being asked to become more grounded, pay more attention and become more vociferous!  In other words, we can meet the insidious forces that might frighten and fatigue us with a fierce fire of compassionate action.  Just in case you forgot….here are some tools for staying in your body and keeping it real:

The Big Three:

1)  Feel your feet and send a tap root into the earth

2)  Bring your hands to a centering place on your body

3)   Orient yourself in space and time – notice details (sights and sounds) in immediate environment

Other tools:

  • Simple body movements
  • Deep belly breaths 4 count inhale, 2 count hold, 6 count exhale, 2 count hold
  • Tapping body (face, collarbone)
  • Humming and toning
  • Shaking
  • Drinking water
  • Taking a time out from the situation
  • Physical exercise
  • Journaling
  • Listening to music
  • Calling a friend for support
  • nature nature nature!!

May the wild fire within you be an expression of your LOVE for this world and may your gorgeous brain be the vehicle of actions so profoundly fascinating, joyful and powerful that wherever you walk, peace and justice follow.
